This is absolutely fascinating, thank you. It's obvious how much work went into it.

I find it mind-boggling how long the Romans were ruling Britain for, and then, suddenly, it was just over and they were gone!

Really pertinent points that you make about the medieval mind and how they understood the supernatural and the saints. Very different to how we approach sainthood and canonisation now. But rather more exciting and colourful- and eccentric!

Thank you Sophia. I did labour over this piece for a while so I’m really happy to hear that you appreciated it.

It is hard to grasp the timescales for this period…if we go back 350 years from today we would be in the late 1700s which seems like the distant past to most of us!

Thank you Becca! What thorough work. There are a couple of details regarding the Synod of Whitby and the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons that make so much more sense now!

It is difficult to read historians who throw out the possibility spiritual reality. Yes, the lives of the Saints are so much more than names and dates!

I am excited for the next installment!

Thank you! I am worried it is too long but I already had a hard time getting it completed as it is. It is a very fascinating period, and of course also a long period…600 years is the equivalent of from 1420 to now so of course a huge amount happens.

I agree it is difficult to read secular historians who completely discount the spiritual realm. Unfortunately that is most historians, which is why I don’t plan on having a primarily historical focus, I don’t think it would be useful for what I am trying to do.

This essay ended up being rather later than I had hoped, so the next installment should be middle of next week, God willing.

I love this period of history. I’ve spent time learning about it with my kids in our homeschool, but I didn’t have much exposure to it during my schooling (of course in the US.) I bet people will read the lives of the Saints that you share with us and then come back to this post as a reference over time.

Yes for sure, I’m hoping that too :)
